NAUGATUCK — Fire destroyed a car on Route 8 southbound on Wednesday night.

Waterbury and Naugatuck firefighters responded to the fire just south of Exit 29, about 50 feet away from the city line. Waterbury Deputy Fire Chief Rick Hart said the car was fully involved when they arrived on scene.

“The fire just wouldn’t go out,” Hart said.

The four passengers of the car were uninjured.

Additional water brought in by Naugatuck firefighters was used to finally put it out.

Hart said the people in the car had noticed smoke while driving on Route 8 just before 8 p.m. and pulled over. When they opened the hood “the fire just took off on them,” Hart said.

The car, a SAAB sedan, was a total loss, Hart said.
