BEACON FALLS — A kitchen fire Monday morning left a home on Pines Bridge Road uninhabitable for the time being.

Beacon Hose Company No. 1 responded to a structure fire at 340 Pines Bridge Road at about 9 a.m. There was heavy smoke billowing out of the four-bedroom, Colonial-style home when the first unit arrived on the scene, Beacon Hose spokesman Jeremy Rodorigo said.

Firefighters found heavy fire in the kitchen, and the fire had extended to the attic and living area, Rodorigo said. Beacon Hose called for assistance from the Oxford, Bethany and Seymour fire departments, particularly for an extra water supply. The nearest hydrant to the home is almost a mile away next to Matthies Park, he said.

However, firefighters didn’t need the extra water. They doused most of the heavy fire within 15 minutes using Beacon Hose’s 1,000-gallon tanker truck, Rodorigo said. After knocking down the fire, firefighters extinguished hot spots in the walls and ceiling, he said.

Within about an hour the fire was under control, and firefighters were ventilating the home and cleaning up.

“The guys did a very efficient job of putting the fire out quickly,” Rodorigo said.

Rodorigo said no one was in the house at the time the fire started and nobody was injured.

“Thank God nobody was hurt,” he said.

According to property records, the house is owned by Americo and Maria Lage.

Fire Marshal Eddie Rodriguez said the cause is under investigation, but it looks like the fire started on the stove in the kitchen.

The fire caused significant damage to the kitchen area, which is pretty much gutted, Rodriguez said. The house is uninhabitable right now, but it’s not a total loss, he said.

“It’s going to take some time to fix it and get these people back in their homes,” Rodriguez said.
