NAUGATUCK —Firefighters put out a fire at the Eastern Co. on Bridge Street late Tuesday night.

Firefighters responded to scene shortly before midnight. Fire Chief Ken Hanks said that it was a small fire inside the doorway. The fire damaged one of the walls and there was minor water damage from the sprinklers.

The Prospect Fire Department was called in for back up.

According to Hanks, the sprinklers put out most of the fire. Hanks said that while the cause remains undetermined, the department believes that it was accidental.

The Eastern Co., according to its website, was founded in 1898 and is a manufacturer of industrial hardware, security products and metal casings. It has worldwide operations and the local factory is at 112 Bridge Street.

According to the assessor’s online database, 112 Bridge St. is an 8,040-square-foot building and it was built in 1930.

Hanks said there is little cleanup to do, and that the building should be back in operation sometime Wednesday.
