NAUGATUCK — Eversource is in the midst of a $1.1 million project to upgrade the gas distribution system in Naugatuck.

The project includes replacing 3,000 feet of existing cast iron and bare steel gas main with newer plastic pipe, which the utility company states is safer, more durable and better able to handle fluctuations in underground temperatures.

Work will be done along Arch, Lewis, Russell, Scott and Theresa streets, Nixon Avenue and Manners Avenue, a press release stated. Construction crews are working between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The work may cause traffic delays due to alternating one-way traffic, and customers may experience a short disruption to their natural gas service when the new line is being activated. Customers will be notified in advance by letter, phone or an in-person visit, the release stated. The work is expected to be complete by early August.
