WATERBURY — Representatives from the Public Utility Regulatory Authority will meet with residents Thursday during a public hearing on electricity generation rates.

The hearing was arranged by state Sen. Joan Hartley (D-15) due to concerns that consumers throughout the state have been hurt by fluctuating and exorbitant electricity distribution rate changes and the automatic switching of utility distributors, according to a press release issued by Hartley’s office.

“In view of some of the exponential increases in electric distribution rates that we have seen in recent weeks, I asked the Public Utility Regulatory Authority (PURA) to hold a hearing in Waterbury so that Waterbury residents and the Greater Waterbury community can speak directly with PURA officials about these high electricity rates and problems with how some of these electricity generation plans are marketed,” Hartley said in the release.

The hearing will be held in City Hall, 235 Grand St., beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Connecticut’s electricity consumers pay a two-part price for electricity: one part for the generation of the electricity out-of-state suppliers, and a second part for Connecticut Light & Power or United Illuminating to deliver that electricity over their network of privately-owned electric lines and poles. In recent months, several of these private generators have seen their electric rates increase substantially, the release stated.
