NAUGATUCK – A man driving a Dodge Ram pickup truck was injured and transported to Waterbury Hospital after rear-ending a school bus Wednesday morning, authorities said.

The accident occurred at 7:45 a.m. on Route 63 at the intersection with Osborn Road, authorities said. No students were on the bus, which came from New Haven, and the bus driver was not injured, authorities said.

Firefighters had to force the pickup driver’s door open to extricate him, and take additional measures to stabilize the truck and driver in case of a spinal injury, Fire Chief Ken Hanks said.

The truck driver was conscious and alert, Hanks said.

The front of the truck was smashed in and the bus sustained some damage to the rear bumper on the right, Hanks said.

Traffic was stopped for about 20 minutes while crews assisted the pickup’s driver, causing delays to commuters, according to Lt. Robert Harrison, spokesman for the Naugatuck Police Department. More information was not released Wednesday by police.
