NAUGATUCK — Police have charged the driver in a one-car accident that closed down a portion of New Haven Road.
Naugatuck police spokesman Lt. Bryan Cammarata said at about 6 a.m. a car hit a utility pole near Hazel Avenue. The accident left the pole unstable. The road between Cross Street and Hazel Avenue remains closed as the pole is being replaced.
The driver of the car, 30-year-old Tyron Hammond of Naugatuck, fled the scene this morning on foot and was found shortly after walking nearby by officers , he said.
Hammond was charged with evading responsibility, operation of motor vehicle without a license, and traveling too fast for conditions.
The road is expected to remain closed into the evening. Police are advising drivers to avoid the area as significant delays will be experienced.
