NAUGATUCK — A domestic dispute led to the lockdown of two schools and a day care in downtown Wednesday morning.

At about 8:41 a.m., police received a report of a domestic dispute from a female victim, Naugatuck Police Spokesman Lt. Bryan Cammarata said. The victim reported her estranged husband, 29-year-old Victor Diaz of Naugatuck, had just threatened her with a gun near Dunkin Donuts on Meadow Street. The victim told police Diaz had walked away towards the area of the Town Green on Meadow Street.

As units responded downtown, Salem Elementary School, Hillside Intermediate School and a private day care in the area were all notified to lock down as a precaution, Cammarata said.

Officers located Diaz, a few minutes later walking near the corner of Old Firehouse Road and Maple Street, Cammarata said. Upon locating the suspect all schools were notified and the lockdown was suspended, he said.

Cammarata said officers searched Diaz and didn’t find a gun and he denied having one. He said officers and a police canine searched the area as well and no weapon was found. Police left the scene at about 10:30 a.m.

Cammarata said Diaz admitted he had contact with his wife, who has a valid protective order issued against him.

Diaz was arrested and charged with criminal violation of a protective order, threatening and breach of peace. Wednesday’s arrest is the fourth time that Diaz has been charged with violating a protective order since March 26. He was held on a $100,000 surety bond and is scheduled to appear in Waterbury Superior Court Thursday.

Cammarata said the incident remains under investigation.
