PROSPECT — A developer wants to build a Dollar General in town.

The Planning and Zoning Commission last week accepted an application to build a Dollar General store at 14 Union City Road. The 1-acre property at the corner of Union City Road and Old Schoolhouse Road is owned by Joseph and Katherine Sajda, according to land records.

The plans for the Dollar General were submitted by the Torrington-based development firm Garrett Homes LLC.

According to plans submitted with the Land Use Office, the proposed one-story building will be 9,100 square feet and have 37 parking spaces. The parking lot will have an entrance on Old Schoolhouse Road and an entrance and exit on Union City Road, according to the plans. The building will have a brick veneer, lapboard, and asphalt shingles, according to submitted architectural drawings,

A one-story, 1,200-square-foot house and a 930-square-foot garage would have to be torn down to build the store.

The commission set a public hearing for May 17 for a special permit for the store. The project needs a special permit because the proposed building is over 2,500 square feet.
