NAUGATUCK — A fitness center on Route 63 has plans to build a larger facility on the abutting property.

Seymour-based developer Tom Haynes has filed an application at Naugatuck Town Hall to develop a 17,000-square-foot Planet Fitness on 15 acres he owns at 1188 New Haven Road, or Route 63. A drive-in movie theater and then a golf driving range operated in the past on the property, which has sat vacant for several years.

The proposed building would be more than twice as large as the current facility, which operates at 1186 New Haven Road, not far from the Bethany border.

The application is currently pending before the Inland Wetlands and Watercourses Agency, which has determined the impact to the abutting wetlands will be significant. The project would impact 0.11 acres of wetlands and 1.39 acres within 100 feet of wetlands. All told, 4.912 acres of wetlands soils will be altered, according to the application.

A land use hearing on the project will be scheduled for 6 p.m. June 17 at Town Hall.
The proposal also needs a special permit from the Zoning Commission, which will either give a positive or a negative referral to the Planning Commission.

Haynes can begin construction if all approvals are met from land use boards.
