NAUGATUCK – The state Department of Environmental Protection tranquilized and caught an adolescent black bear in the Rubber Avenue area of Naugatuck Sunday night.

The department received a call from the Naugatuck Police Department about the bear Sunday afternoon and chased the bear up two trees before finally tranquilizing it with a dart, DEP spokeswoman Cyndy Chanaca said.

The bear had an ear tag from New Jersey, but was released into a Connecticut state forest. It weighed 95 pounds, Chanaca said.

“If there’s bears sighted in your neighborhood or vicinity, you should not have bird feeders, because bears are attracted to bird feeders,” Chanaca said.
