NAUGATUCK — The Naugatuck Democratic Town Committee has endorsed Charles P. Marenghi to run for burgess to fill a vacancy on the party’s ticket created when longtime Burgess Robert J. Burns Sr. withdrew from the race.
Marenghi, 51, is a STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) teacher at Cross Street Intermediate School. He is chairman of the Howard Whittemore Memorial Library Board of Trustees. He most recently served on the Naugatuck Arts Commission, including as chairman from 2013 to 2015.
Burns, 93, was first elected as a burgess in 1973 and has served ever since. The Democratic Town Committee endorsed Burns to run again in July. Committee Chairman M. Leonard Caine III said Burns withdrew earlier this month due to health issues.
Caine said Marenghi, a Democrat, expressed an interest in running and the committee’s executive board voted to endorse him.
“It is my hope to be a public servant that lives up to the core values that Mr. Burns embodied in his decades of leadership,” Marenghi said.
