Deadline approaching for assistance programs

NAUGATUCK — The deadline for elderly renters and totally disabled renters to apply for assistance is Thursday, Sept. 15.

To be eligible, an applicant or his/her spouse must be 65 years of age before the end of the preceding year. Proof of income must be presented with the application. Examples of income include tax return, W2 forms, pension, interest income, and social security year end statement.

To be eligible for assistance, income for a single person may not exceed $32,300 and the income for a married couple may not exceed $39,500.

A renter qualifying under section 12-17d shall be entitled for payment from the state providing 35% of expenses exceed 5 percent of income. Proof of rent, electric, gas, water and fuel payments must be presented.

The disabled are also eligible and do not have to be 65 years of age. Proof from the Social Security Administration must be presented when making application.

The deadline for filing for additional disability, blind, and veteran’s exemptions is Oct. 1.

Anyone already receiving a regular disability, blind, or veterans exemption may qualify for the additional exemption based on an income guideline.

All income is based on earnings for 2010. A single person’s income may not have exceeded $32,300 and a married couple’s income may not have exceeded $39,500.

Proof of income must be presented application.
