SOUTHBURY — The Connecticut Daughters of the American Revolution honored Scott Szturma of Beacon Falls with its Outstanding Teacher of American History Award at a banquet April 13.
Szturma is an eighth-grade teacher at Harry B. Flood Middle School in Stratford.
“Mr. Szturma can be described with many adjectives: patriotic, humble, professional, enthusiastic, supportive, committed, ethical, respected, personable, and well-liked. He sets the bar high by building tomorrow’s leaders to be well-educated, independent, respected citizens of good character and strong moral ethics,” a release issued by DAR stated.
The release stated Szturma makes history come alive for his students by taking them on field trips to Boston’s Freedom Trail, the Holocaust Museum and Ground Zero in New York City. Besides field trips he challenges them to explore various historical events and involves his students in Veterans Day programs, multi-school simulation programs, and discussions, the release stated.
Szturma has been teaching for 13 years with the last 10 in the Stratford school system. He is a TEAM teacher mentor, teaches after school programs, and is the head baseball coach at Bunnell High School in Stratford. He also coaches basketball in the Beacon Falls Basketball League.
Szturma’s name has been submitted to the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution for consideration as the National Outstanding Teacher of American History.
