Democrat state Sen. Joseph Crisco won an 11th term representing the 17thDistrict Tuesday.

Crisco defeated Republican Tony Szweczyk by an unofficial count of 13,914 to 6,541.

Crisco, 78 of Woodbridge, is Chief Deputy President Pro Tempore, federal relations liaison and co-chairman of the Insurance and Real Estate Committee. In his most recent term, he introduced a bill that would have created a “bill of rights” for foster parents unhappy with the state. He also signed a pledge that he would never raise taxes on his constituents.

He was first elected to the state Senate in 1992 after retiring from his job as a lobbyist for United Technologies. He publicly financed his campaign through the Citizens’ Election Program.

Szewczyk, 66 of Derby, is no political newcomer, He served two terms on the city’s board of aldermen and is on the Planning and Zoning Commission and the parking authority. He is also on the Regional Planning Commission of the Valley Council of Governments. He worked as an architect before retiring and is now a part-time deliveryman at Torello’s Auto Parts in West Haven.

The 17th Senate District covers Ansonia, Beacon Falls, Bethany, Derby and parts of Hamden, Woodbridge and Naugatuck.
