NAUGATUCK — Rush hour traffic backed up on Route 8’s southbound lanes Thursday afternoon as fire crews battled brush fires along the roadway.
Fire Capt. Jason Seaman said fire crews battled five simultaneous brush fires along the stretch of highway between Exit 27 and Exit 29.
“We had crews search for more,” Seaman said, explaining that one of the department’s fire engines handled two brush fires, between Exit 27 and Exit 28.
Waterbury and Beacon Falls fire crews were also alerted to search for fires in their areas as well, but no other blazes were reported.
No injuries to firefighters were reported. Seaman said there was a minor car crash near one of the brush fire sites.
Police Deputy Chief C. Colin McAllister said officials received reports that two juveniles may have been seen near where the fires had burned, but those reports were not confirmed.
“Our officers found no evidence of anything criminal,” McAllister said.
