Crash closes Route 8 Sunday night


NAUGATUCK — Route 8 South between exits 26 and 27 in Naugatuck was closed for an hour Sunday night after a truck accident.

A GMC Sierra pickup truck flipped on its passenger side, and the two male occupants were able to get out on their own, firefighters said.

The Naugatuck Fire Department responded at 6:59 p.m., two minutes after receiving the call. They immediately closed the highway. With help from several local and state police officers, firefighters cleaned up oil and other fluids on the roadway, while two tow trucks from Sibby’s Automotive in Naugatuck flipped the truck and towed it from the scene, Fire Capt. Vin Healy said.

The truck was totaled, he said.

Police reported Matthew Kuhar, 23, of Shelton, was driving the truck. When he tried to switch lanes, police reported, the truck swerved and he lost control.

Kuhar was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital after complaining of serious back pain.

Christopher Lengyel, 22, of Middletown, was the passenger, police reported. He suffered a laceration on his right shin, police reported. He was taken by to Waterbury Hospital for treatment of a possible fractured leg and severe back pain.
