HARTFORD — An additional 87 coronavirus-linked deaths were reported Wednesday, marking the largest day-to-day increase in the viral outbreak since mid-May.

There have been 541 deaths reported since Jan. 1, and the death toll has now reached 6,536 since the first fatality of the COVID-19 pandemic occurred last March 17.

The 87 additional deaths announced Wednesday represented the largest single-day reporting total since the 94 deaths recorded on May 13.

Deaths are considered a lagging indicator of community spread behind infections and hospitalizations.

There were 3,529 new cases of COVID-19 reported Wednesday out of 56,000 test results that were received. The daily percentage of positive test results dropped from the 10.7% reported Tuesday to 6.2%.

There now have been 220,576 cases reported since the first infections were detected early last March.

Hospitalizations saw a net decrease of six patients between new admissions and discharges. There were 1,148 patients hospitalized with confirmed cases of COVID-19.

The state reported Wednesday there have been 2,217 cases in Naugatuck since last March, an increase of 31 from Tuesday. There have been 554 cases in Prospect and 343 in Beacon Falls, increases of nine and three, respectively, since Tuesday.

There were two additional coronavirus-associated deaths in Naugatuck reported Wednesday, bringing the total since last March to 74.

State health officials reported no new coronavirus-associated deaths in Beacon Falls and Prospect. There have been five coronavirus-associated deaths in Beacon Falls and one in Prospect since last March, according to state data.
