NAUGATUCK — The Connecticut Water Company began logging in the company’s Hopkins Brook watershed property Monday.

The company will thin selected areas of the forest off Maple Hill Road on Mondays through Saturdays, according to a company release.

The operation is part of the company’s forest improvement and maintenance program, and involves harvesting selected trees to make room for younger, healthier trees, according to the release.

“The primary objective of this program is to improve the overall health of the forest, to protect and enhance the quality of water produced from this source and to improve the value of the forest over the long term,” said Cindy Gaudino, manager of source protection and real estate.

Connwood Foresters of Rockfall is helping oversee the operation.
