NewsCommunity Community snapshots By mycitizensnews - March 29, 2014 0 23 Naugatuck resident and Kingswood Oxford running back Sharrieff Grice (on knee, furthest to right) attended the National Underclassmen Football Combine on March 16 in Miami, Fla., where he was awarded the 2014 Miami MVP Award. The award earned Grice an invitation to participate in the U100 Top Prospect Elite Event this coming summer. Last fall as a junior, Grice rushed for 840 yards and 11 touchdowns for Kingswood Oxford. He is being recruited by a number of Division I universities and will be making his first visits this spring. -CONTRIBUTED The U12 Prospect Cobras won their division at the NEFC preseason outdoor soccer tournament in Massachusetts on March 15-16. -CONTRIBUTED Students from Algonquin and Community schools in Prospect toss pennies into the foundation of the new Prospect Elementary School before the concrete was poured March 19. According to superstition, throwing coins into a building’s foundation will bring the building, and those who inhabit it, good luck. Karate students broke over 1,000 boards and raised $6,245 for the hospital. The Alex Jansen/Craig Puffenberger family was the top fundraisers raising $3,078. The Meleschnig family raised $537 and Nate DiMatteo collected $500 in donations. Karate students at the club have raised $52,345 during the break-a-thon since 2004. -CONTRIBUTED Woodland Regional High School graduate and Prospect resident Ashley Riley, a sophomore at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pa., finished eighth in the long jump, clearing 15-7¾, at the Centennial Conference Indoor Championships. It was her first career place at the conference meet.
