Prospect Republican Town Committee member Nazih Noujaim stands by a truckload of food items and cash collected during the committee’s annual Open Your Heart Valentine Day’s collection drive Feb. 13 at Oliver’s Supermarket. The drive was cut short due to the frigid temperatures. The food was donated to the Prospect Food Bank and nearly $400 was raised for the Prospect Fuel Fund. In total, 250 valentines were made for Connecticut veterans. Most of the cards will go to veterans at the Newington, Rocky Hill and West Haven veterans hospitals, while some will be sent to a unit of deployed troops. Participants also donated over $250 worth of individually wrapped candy to give to veterans. Members of the chapter were also awarded a Certificate of Appreciation for their ‘Continued Support of our Veterans’ by the Ladies Auxiliary Post 7330. –CONTRIBUTED
Western Connecticut State University student William Alfiere, of Beacon Falls, sank a half-court basketball shot Jan. 27 at halftime of the Colonials basketball game to win $5,000 toward his tuition. ‘I didn’t expect to make it. You throw a shot up like that every now and then for fun, but you never expect it to go in. … But as soon as I shot it, I knew it was going to go in. It’s one of those feelings you have as a basketball player,’ said Alfiere, who was a captain of the Woodland Regional High School boys basketball team as a senior, in a press release.
