Junior Achievement is a non-profit organization based out of Colorado Spring, Colo., that aims to teach school-aged children financial literacy. –LUKE MARSHALL First-grade students from Jodie Burns’ class at Maple Hill Elementary School visited Kathryn Guglielmo’s honors chemistry class at Naugatuck High School Oct. 30 for a ‘Chemistry in Action’ program that included activities like molecules in motion and mixing a borax solution to make a bouncy ball. Roy Thomas Merriman, who served in the U.S. Army, was killed in action during the Korean War at the age of 18. American Legion Post 194 in Prospect is named in his honor. Douglas Merriman, who is not a veteran, has been giving a presentation to Long River students for many years to honor Veterans Day. ‘If I reach a couple of them, that’s all I want to do,’ he said. –ELIO GUGLIOTTI Over 50 Long River Middle School students volunteered to stay after school Nov 9 to assemble 228 care packages for veterans at the VA Hospital in West Haven. Students showcased their photography, painting, drawing and music during the evening. –LUKE MARSHALL Hidden Acres Therapeutic Riding Center founder and Executive Director Theron Simons welcomes guest during the 4th annual Night of Caring in October at the Mattatuck Museum in Waterbury. More than 120 people attend the event, a record number, and more than $42,000 was raised to support Hidden Acres. The mission of Hidden Acres, which is located on Gabriel Drive in Naugatuck, is improving minds, bodies and spirits through the benefits of therapeutic riding and other equine-assisted activities. ‘We’ve grown so much since we started in 2008, and touched so many more lives than we ever imagined possible, thanks to a lot of generous support,’ Simons said in a press release. ‘But the need continues to grow in our community for those faced with physical, developmental and emotional challenges. During the event, which was organized by the Student Council, students promoted breast cancer awareness by wear pink to school. Students who wore pink made a $1 donation and received a raffle ticket and Breast Cancer Awareness sticker. Students and staff raised over $500 to donate to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
