CityHillNAUGATUCK — Students at City Hill Middle School have begun traveling a path to a more enriching education experience.

In January, City Hill Principal Brian Hendrickson presented the Alternative Path Program, which is designed to help students struggling in a traditional classroom setting, to the Board of Education.

After receiving the consensus of the board, Hendrickson began the program at the school.

The program has been up and running for approximately a month and so far it is going very well, according to Hendrickson.

“I got a lot of positive response from faculty, students, and parents,” Hendrickson said. “The students see the value of the program. They understand they are in an environment that helps them.”

Hendrickson said that there are currently five students taking part in the program. During January’s board meeting Hendrickson said while there is no maximum number of students the program allows, he did not expect more than 12 students to take part in the program.

The program, which was modeled after the Second Chance Program at Naugatuck High School with the help of Principal Janice Saam, allows students to be taught in a smaller setting, with more chance for one-on-one time with the teachers, rather than attending regular classes.
