Car goes airborne, hits tree

PROSPECT — An airborne car struck a tree 20 feet off the ground before rolling over and crashing on its left side Monday morning.

Harvey Morris, 72, of Cheshire, was driving his gray 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee east on Cheshire Road around 10:50 a.m. when it hit wet leaves around a left curve and went spinning out of control, police said.

It struck went through wooden wire rope guardrails on the driver’s side, then struck a large stone before flying through the air, police said.

Prospect firefighters had to cut the car’s roof off to extract Morris, who had minor injuries, police said.

Morris was taken to Saint Mary’s Hospital for treatment.

The Regional Water Authority was notified of a gas leak on its property from the car, police said.

Police charged Morris with the infraction of traveling too fast for conditions.
