Matthew R. Katra

Republican

Burgess candidate

Why are you running for this position?
“I am running for burgess to serve the taxpayers of Naugatuck and to make Naugatuck a better place to live.  I plan on doing this by bringing a hardworking, common sense approach to the office.  I have always taken a fiscally conservative approach to the borough budget as a member of the Finance Board, which I will continue to do as burgess. You can find out more about me and my positions at www.mattkatra.com.”

Have you held public office in the past? If so, what positions and when?
“I have served in the Finance Board from 2009 to the present, as a Zoning Commissioner from 2005 to 2009 and as an Aquifer Commissioner from 2006 to 2009.

What experience makes you qualified for this position?
“My combined experience in both my job as a team lead and IT architect as well as my service to the borough as a Zoning Commissioner and member of the Finance Board is what gives me the qualifications for the office of burgess.  In my role of team lead, my responsibilities include leading and directing a team of over 30 people as well as the responsibility to control costs within the department.  In addition, my experience in serving the community as a Zoning and Aquifer Commissioner and currently as a member of the Finance Board gives me the knowledge of borough departments.  I believe this combined management and community experience gives me a unique qualification to serve the taxpayers as burgess.

If elected, what are your priorities and goals?
“If elected, my priorities as a burgess will always be the taxpayers of Naugatuck.  In 2009 I was appointed to the Finance Commission where I serve the taxpayers of Naugatuck today. As a member of the board, I had a few simple goals. These goals included to carefully watch all borough spending and reduce spending where appropriate, cut wasteful programs and to invest wisely in borough infrastructure. I believe the borough budget should be treated just as we would treat our own finances, we don’t want to see our money wasted on duplicate programs and careless spending.  We should demand the same from our elected officials.”
