NAUGATUCK — On Oct. 6 a group of 37 Naugatuck High School Air Force Junior ROTC cadets cleaned the east riverbank of the Naugatuck River in Linden Park.

The project included planting more than 40 pounds of grass seed, provided by the Naugatuck-Pomperaug Chapter Trout Unlimited, scores of streamco willow cuttings, and other flowering plants as part of a beautification and erosion control projects.

The birdhouses that were erected in the spring were cleaned out and several more were erected. The newly placed houses will provide housing next spring for owls, wood ducks and tree swallows. The cadets removed more than 25 bags of debris from the river bank.

The clean was led by Lt. Col. Valerie Lofland, USAF (ret) and Master Sgt. Gary Morrone, USAF (ret) and organized by Joe Savarese and Bob Gregorski of the Naugatuck River Watershed Association and sponsored by the borough of Naugatuck.
