NAUGATUCK — A Beacon Wood Court man called borough police Thursday evening to report a medical emergency after a slow-moving car, sputtering and weaving, pulled over within view of his house, with the woman driving slumped over the steering wheel.

Borough police opened the door to an overpowering smell of alcohol found Randie Murphy, 28, of 81 Beacon Manor Circle, asleep inside with her two children, ages 3 and 4, in the backseat, Lt. Robert Harrison said. A bottle of apple-flavored vodka and nippers of banana-flavored schnapps were also in the car, Harrison said.

After officers shook Murphy awake, she could not coherently respond to their questions or stand up straight, Harrison said. Her blood alcohol content was determined to be four times over the legal limit, Harrison said.

She was charged with DUI and two counts of risk of injury to a minor, a felony. She appeared Friday in Waterbury Superior Court and is still in custody, Harrison said. The Department of Children and Families took her children to her parents’ house in New Britain, Harrison said.
