NAUGATUCK — Plans to renovate Naugatuck High School include fixing some obvious flaws–like cracks in the walls and fields that remain soggy for days after a rainstorm, and some not so obvious–like doors that are too narrow for people with disabilities and windows that aren’t energy efficient, making it expensive to heat the building.
On Nov. 8, voters will decide whether to spend millions to renovate the high school to a like-new condition meant to last another 20 years.
The proposed project would replace windows with energy efficient windows, replace all ceiling and floor tiles, remove hazardous materials, construct new athletic fields, repair drainage systems, rearrange classrooms, and install new furniture, equipment, and computers. The Board of Education central offices would also be moved into the high school.
Naugatuck residents who want to tour the high school before determining which way to cast their vote will have a chance to do so.
Representatives from the Board of Education, maintenance staff, and/or representatives from Kaestle Boos Associates, Inc., the design firm which did the initial study of the school and what work it needs going forward will take interested parties on a 45-minute to one hour tour. Administrators will be present for most tours to provide information and answer questions.
Tours are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on the following dates: Oct. 4, Oct.12, Oct. 19, Oct. 20, Oct. 25, Nov. 2, and Nov. 7.
