NAUGATUCK — The borough will complete the automation of trash and recycling routes next week.

On Monday, the Public Works Department will begin distributing 96 gallon garbage and recycling carts to home that do not currently have the barrels. Collection schedules will not change and residents can begin using the carts immediately, according to a release issued by the department.

Currently, half of the borough has the automated carts. Automated collection has resulted in a reduction of trash and an increase in recycling rates, the release said. The borough currently pays $69 a ton for household trash and every ton reduced is a direct tax dollar savings, the release stated.

Residents should be aware that when setting the carts out for collection they must be 2 to 3 feet apart so the automated arm is able to reach and lift them. Carts set out backwards or too close to obstacles cannot be collected.

Informational flyers will be delivered along with the carts. The information is also available online at www.naugatuck-ct.gov.

Smaller 64-gallon carts have been ordered and delivery is expected in September. Residents who want to use the smaller carts should call Public Works Department at (203) 720-7071. For more information, call the department or e-mail publicworks@naugatuck-ct.gov.
