NAUGATUCK — Sanitary smoke testing of certain sewers in the borough will be performed next week.

On Tuesday, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Veolia Water crews will be smoke testing sanitary sewers as part of the borough’s ongoing sanitary sewer inspection program. Testing will be done on Cross Street, Cotton Hollow Court, Meadowbrook Place, and a portion of Beacon Valley Road.

The smoke testing helps to identify areas where “clear” water is entering the system and could cause sanitary sewer backups. If smoke should enter a building during the test, it probably means that there are defects in the plumbing that could allow dangerous sewer gas to enter a home. The smoke has no odor, is non-toxic, non-staining, does not create a fire hazard, and will dissipate in a few minutes, according to a release issued by the public works department.

This testing cannot be conducted during rainy periods or windy conditions. If conditions do not allow for testing a rain/wind date is scheduled for Thursday.
