NAUGATUCK — The borough has put the former Prospect Street School back on the market.
Earlier this year the Naugatuck-based ICES, Inc., a company that provides support services for autistic people and others with mental disorders, offered $800,000 for the former school.
According to Naugatuck Economic Development Corporation CEO Ron Pugliese ICES was unable to fulfill its contract with the borough and the purchase fell through.
A message left for ICES Executive Director Chet Doheny was not returned as of this post.
The borough has put the building back on the market in hopes of finding a new buyer, Pugliese said.
Prospect Street School served as an elementary school for almost 60 years before it became a preschool three years ago. As part of a cost-saving plan, the school closed entirely last year and the preschoolers and the Head Start and School Readiness programs were moved to Central Avenue Elementary School. Students who attended Central Avenue were redistricted to other elementary schools.
The school board transferred ownership of the building last year to the borough.
The 41,000 square-foot school sits on 1.1 acres. According to the borough the property was appraised at approximately $2.2 million.
