NAUGATUCK — Naugatuck schools will continue to have remote learning at home on snow days.

The state Board of Education ruled that Connecticut schools could choose to conduct online classes in the event schools are canceled due to weather conditions. Schools also were given the option to cancel classes altogether and make the day up later in the school year.

Naugatuck schools took the approach to try virtual learning on snow days and determine whether to continue based on how many students participate online.

Borough schools closed on Dec. 17 and Dec. 18 due to inclement weather but still held classes virtually. Superintendent of Schools Christopher Montini reported to the Board of Education on Jan. 14 that attendance was 81.5% on Dec. 17 and 83% on Dec. 18.

Montini said the attendance rates were lower than the 90% average attendance for a normal day this school year. But, he said, the rates were comparable to the attendance rates of 81% and 88% on two school days that were delayed two hours last school year before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Montini said the district will continue remote learning on snow days and assess them.
