Borough man suspected of shooting woman dies

NAUGATUCK — The man suspected of killing his ex-girlfriend Sunday and then shooting himself in the police department’s parking lot died Monday afternoon, according to police.

Robert DeSantis, 40, died at an area hospital at about 1:30 p.m., Southington police said Tuesday morning.

Police believe DeSantis, who lived in Naugatuck, shot 41-year-old Michelle Barrett at her grandmother’s home in the Plantsville section of Southington on Sunday.

At about 5:30 a.m. DeSantis shot himself in the head in a car in the Naugatuck Police Department parking lot, according to police. DeSantis initially survived the self-inflicted gunshot and was transported to a local hospital.

The investigation is still active, police said.
