A Waterbury businessman who lives in Naugatuck pleaded guilty Thursday to a federal charge that he filed a false tax return.

Augustine Ofili, 54, has been involved in at least three different types of businesses, including a company that offers prepaid cell phones and another involved with insurance, according to listings on several websites and state records.

Ofili, of Fawn Meadow Drive, Naugatuck, underreported business income on his 2004 through 2007 federal income tax returns, according to a release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Ofili is listed as the CEO of APJ Associates, which is an East Main Street company that offers a range of services related to money orders, credit repair and cellphones, according to the company’s website.

Ofili didn’t report capital gains from the sale of property in Bridgeport and underreported income gained from his insurance company, Augustine Insurance Agency in Bridgeport, according to federal authorities.

Authorities claim Ofili underpaid a total of $47,964 in federal taxes.

He’s scheduled to be sentenced in November. He faces three years in prison and will have to pay back taxes, in addition to applicable penalties.
