NAUGATUCK — A suspected drunken driver claimed the life of a 44-year-old local father of three during a motor vehicle crash Saturday morning in Trumbull, police said.

Miguel Aguilar, of 37 City Brook Road, Naugatuck, was driving south on Route 8 around 6 a.m. when his car was struck from behind by a sport utility vehicle driven by Drew Bridgman, 23, of Stamford, according to state police.

The collision forced both cars into the median, and the 1993 Toyota Camry Aguilar was driving rolled over, the report states. Trumbull Ambulance transported Aguilar to Bridgeport Hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to a police report.

The 2006 Chevrolet Equinox Bridgman was driving struck a metal beam guardrail. Bridgman sustained minor scrapes and scratches.

The accident occurred about 200 feet south of Exit 7 on Route 8 while Aguilar was on his way to work. State police determined that Bridgman was under the influence of drugs/alcohol at the time of the accident, and they arrested him.

Bridgman, of 1201 Washington Blvd., Stamford, was charged with manslaughter in the second degree, driving under the influence, reckless driving and operation with a suspended license or registration. He was released after posting a $100,000 bond and is scheduled to be arraigned March 10 at Bridgeport Superior Court.

Aguilar leaves a wife, Marisol Cervantes, and three children: David, 21, John 19, and Alexander, 9. Miguel Aguilar worked as a foreman for a construction company, said his son, David.

Miguel Aguilar and his wife moved from New York to Naugatuck in 2006, David Aguilar said.

On Sunday, David Aguilar remembered his father fondly as family and friends tried to console Cervantes and her children at their home.

“He was understanding but strict; everything you should be as a father,” he said. “He taught us how to live our lives.”

Naugatuck Burgess Bob Neth is Aguilar’s neighbor. He said he knew Aguilar to be a hardworking, family man.

“He was a guy who worked every day to provide for his three kids,” Neth said. “He was only 44 years old, he was minding his business, driving down the highway and out of nowhere he gets hit by a damn drunk driver. It is absolutely sad.”
