WINSTED — A Naugatuck man who was seriously injured Saturday in a tree-cutting accident at a cottage on Highland Lake in Winsted has died.

Jose Batista, 52, and another man who was not identified, were cutting down a maple tree that towered over a small red cottage at 168 Shore Drive when a limb cut from the top of the tree fell about 40 feet and struck Batista in the head.

Batista was first taken to the Winsted Health Center and then flown by a Life Star helicopter to Hartford Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, according to police and a hospital spokesman.

It could not be determined who employed Batista or whether the two men were licensed to cut trees.

There was a green bucket truck parked in front of the cottage Sunday with a logo on the doors that said Cicoria Tree Service.
