NAUGATUCK — The assessor’s office is accepting applications for the elderly renter’s program through Oct. 1.
Gov. Dannel Malloy has proposed legislation to reopen the renters program to all applicants, essentially reversing last year’s legislation to sunset the program, a release from the office stated. If the Governor’s proposed legislation does not pass, applicants who will not qualify for a rebate will be notified by mail, the release stated.
Eligible applicants must be 65 years old by Dec. 31, 2013. Anyone receiving social security disability benefits are also eligible, if they meet the requirements of this program.
Also to qualify, a person must rent the house, condo or apartment he or she lives in or share rent payment. They must have been a resident of the state for at least one year before filing a claim.
Income can not exceed $34,100 for a single person or $41,600 for a married couple. The income of husband and wife must be combined with any social security benefits.
Rent, water, gas, electricity and heating bills must be presented. Proof of income for 2013 must be provided. Also a statement from the social security department with 2013 figures is needed.
