NAUGATUCK — The Board of Mayor and Burgesses will consider an amendment to an ordinance that bans registered sex offenders from designated child safety zones.
The board approved the ordinance in January. Under the ordinance, sex offenders are no longer allowed in borough-owned or borough-operated parks, schools, playgrounds, recreation and event centers, pools, gyms, sports fields and facilities, trails, or open space areas.
A proposed amendment to the ordinance would allow a registered sex offender to receive a waiver from the police chief. A waiver would be granted if the person meets certain criteria, including that the he or she is a non-violent sexual offender, the crime was a first offense and was not committed against a minor or a person who was physically helpless, the offender’s victim consents to the waiver, and it is determined that there is no public safety issue.
The board will hold a public hearing on the amendment on Tuesday at 6:45 p.m. at Town Hall. The board is expected to vote on the proposal during its regular meeting, immediately following the public hearing.
