NAUGATUCK — Pieces of rock flew from the Haynes Materials quarry on New Haven Road during a blasting operation at 1:30 p.m. Friday, authorities said.

“We’re not sure what happened, but instead of crumbling down, the rock shot off site,” Fire Chief Ken Hanks said.

At least three properties were hit by flying rocks. One went through the window of a home on New Haven Road, another landed on the hood of a car parked at an accounting office and a couple of rocks landed in the backyard of a house on Shirley Street.

No one was injured. The local fire marshal and state fire marshal are investigating why the rocks flew off the quarry.

“Until we determine what happened, there won’t be any more blasting down there,” Hanks said.

Haynes is cooperating with investigators and is working with anyone who has property damage, he said. Anyone who finds rock debris on their property is asked to call the fire department at (203) 720-7083.
