NAUGATUCK — A Beacon Falls man died from injuries suffered after his car collided head-on with a car going the wrong way on Route 8 Saturday night, state police said.

William J. Baer Jr., 24, of 410 Burton Road, was alive when he was admitted to Waterbury Hospital after the accident, but a hospital nursing supervisor confirmed Sunday that he had died.

He was driving south on Route 8 in his 2008 Honda Accord just north of Exit 27 at around 9:56 p.m. Saturday when the accident occurred, police said. With him in the car was Sara Chmielewski, 22, of 108 Sunnybank Ave., Stratford, according to a police report.

A 2003 Chevy van driven by Edmundo Mendieta, 35, of 271 Lombard St., New Haven, was traveling north in the southbound lane when it collided with Baer’s Honda head on, police said.

Naugatuck firefighters extricated all three from the two vehicles, police said.

Chmielewski was listed in critical condition at Saint Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury on Sunday night, according to a nursing supervisor.

Mendieta was listed in stable condition at Saint Mary’s Hospital, the nursing supervisor said.

The accident remains under investigation by state police.
