BEACON FALLS — Given the troubling economy, town officials weren’t anticipating much if any growth in the town’s Grand List. So, when the 2010 Grand List rose 1.6 percent, it was a pleasant surprise.

“I’m excited and happy that we can try to use what money we have to help maintain the quality of life in Beacon Falls,” First Selectman Susan Cable said.

Cable said with the way the economy was going, she wasn’t expecting any growth in the Grand List.

According the information supplied by the Assessor’s Office, the 2010 net Grand List is $540.5 million, a 1.6 percent or roughly $8.7 million growth over 2009’s list.

A town’s grand list is the total valuation of taxable property within a town. Increases in towns’ grand lists generate new additional revenue often used help to offset potential property tax increases.

Using the town’s current mill rate of 25.6 mills, the increase in the Grand List equals $221,510 in additional revenue.
“Every little bit helps,” Cable said.

The Grand List is broken down into three categories, motor vehicles, personal property, and real estate.

Motor vehicles value increased 3.4 percent or $1.3 million to $39.1 million. Officials attributed the increase to new car purchases and an increase in assessment for older trucks and four-wheel drive vehicles.

Personal property covers items and equipment owned by businesses, the value of personal property increased $594,000 or 3.2 percent to $19.1 million. This increase was attributed to new small businesses opening up in town, officials said.

Real estate value, which makes up the largest portion of the Grand List by far, increased $6.7 million or 1.4 percent to $482.2 million.

Officials said new construction and building permits were the driving factors for the real estate increase.

Cable credited the work of the Assessor’s Office with a job well done.

“I think the assessor and assessor’s assistant did a very good job,” Cable said.
