NAUGATUCK — The Assessor’s Office will accept applications for the Elderly Homeowners Program from Feb. 1 through May 15.
To qualify for a tax break the applicant or spouse must have reached the age of 65 before the end of 2013. Income must not have exceeded $34,100 for a single person or $41,600 for married couple. This income amount must include Social Security paid during 2013.
Permanently and totally disabled individuals are eligible to receive benefits under the Homeowners program regardless of age, provided all other criteria are met. If filing because of a disability, bring the original Notice of Award Letter from the Social Security Administration and SSA1099 form from the social security department as proof. Applications will not be accepted without this proof.
Examples of proof of 2013 income must be presented at time of application. Examples of income: federal income tax return and social security year end statement for 2013 if you file income tax return; W2 forms, pension year end statement, interest income, any other income (rental, etc.) and year end social security statement if you do not file an income tax. Other information needed is date of birth, social security number and telephone number.
If applicant is unable to appear, he or she may send an agent to file on their behalf.
The office will also be accepting applications for additional veteran, blind and disability exemptions Feb. 1 through Oct.1.
Anyone already receiving a regular disability, blind or veteran’s exemption may qualify for an additional exemption based on the state’s income guidelines.
