Assessor’s Office accepting applications for tax programs

BEACON FALLS — The Assessor’s Office is now accepting applications for the state’s Elderly Homeowners tax relief program through May 15.

Applicants must be 65 years old by Dec. 31, 2011 or permanently and totally disabled as defined by Social Security. The program offers tax relief on income and marital status and would apply to this year’s July tax bill. Income limits for the program are $32,300 for a single person and $39,500 for a married couple. Qualifying income includes adjusted gross income from a federal income tax return and Social Security 1099 benefits. Proof of all income for 2011 must be supplied at the time of the application.

Anyone currently on the program, and are required to file, will receive a notice from the Assessor’s Office.

Applications for additional veteran, blind and disability exemptions are also being accepted through Oct. 1. Applicants for the veterans’ program must be 65 years old by Dec. 31, 2011 or permanently and totally disabled as defined by Social Security. Income limits for the program are $32,300 for a single person and $39,500 for a married couple.

The filing period for the town’s local option tax relief program is now open and runs through May 15. The local program is available to homeowners who turned 65 years old by Dec. 31, 2011, are permanently and totally disabled as defined by Social Security, have been a resident of the town for at least one year and are current on their taxes.

Income verification is required for the local program and only one application per household is allowed. Applications can be filed in the Assessor’s Office and are required to be filed every two years to continue eligibility for the program.

Anyone who has previously filed for the local program is asked to make sure there is a current application on file with the town. Anyone who files for the state Elderly Homeowners tax relief program is current with the town’s program.
