Reception to kickoff breast cancer 5K
NEW HAVEN — A free reception open to the public will be held Aug. 14 to kick off New Haven’s 2012 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer campaign. Breast cancer survivors and community members with an interest in the breast cancer issue are encouraged to attend.
Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is a noncompetitive 5K walk hosted by the American Cancer Society that raises awareness and funds to help fight breast cancer.

CT Titans holding tryouts
TERRYVILLE — The CT Titans girls travel fastpitch softball team is holding open tryouts Aug. 11 at Terryville High School 33 N. Harwinton Ave., Terryville.
Tryouts will be held from ( a.m. to 1 p.m. with designated times for different age groups.

OLLI to hold open house
WATERBURY — The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute will hold its annual open house Aug. 15 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the University of Connecticut Waterbury branch.
The open house is and includes lectures, lunch discounts at area restaurants, and a choice of four afternoon classes.
The keynote speaker at the open house will be Dr. Laura K. M. Donorfio, who will give a talk on “Brain Health and Aging Positively.”

Express registrations at Naugatuck Valley Community College
WATERBURY —Naugatuck Valley Community College will hold express registrations for current and prospective students Aug. 18 and 25 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Students can apply to the college, take the placement exam, meet with an advisor, and register and pay for courses. The bookstore will also be open to assist students.

Wellmore appoints chief clinical officer
WATERBURY — Wellmore Behavioral Health announced Dr. Robert “Bert” Plant, has been appointed as its first chief clinical officer.
Plant will be responsible to oversee, develop and manage all clinical and direct care services/programs at Wellmore. Plant is a licensed clinical psychologist and most recently served as the director of community mental health and substance abuse at the Connecticut Department of Children and Families.
Based in Waterbury, Wellmore promotes lifetime wellness through essential and innovative treatment and support for adults and children, according to its mission statement. Wellmore serves a 49-town region spanning from greater Waterbury to the lower Naugatuck Valley and northwest corner of Connecticut.
