Women’s Initiative Fund to hold annual meeting

WATERBURY — The Women’s Initiative Fund at the Connecticut Community Foundation’s Annual Meeting will be held Oct. 10 at 5:30 p.m.

The meeting will take place at Waterbury City Hall, 235 Grand St. The evening’s guest speaker will be children’s author Ann Hodgman of Washington.

The fund will announce its grant recipients for the 2012. The fund is a permanent endowment established in 1993 at the Connecticut Community Foundation. The fund awards grants to nonprofits and programs in greater Waterbury and the Litchfield Hills that focus on education, economic opportunity, social services and health care to improve the quality of life for underserved women and children in our region.

Institute hosting lecture on lyme disease

WATERBURY — The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Connecticut in Waterbury will hold a research lecture on preventing lyme disease Oct. 16.

The lecture will be held from 12:45 to 2 p.m. in room 333 at the University of Connecticut, 99 East Main St. in Waterbury. The lecture is free and open to the public. Advanced registration is required. To register, call (203) 236-9924 or e-mail osher@uconn.edu.

DAV holding monthly meeting

WATERBURY — The Disabled American Veterans Chapter 11 will hold its monthly meeting Oct. 8 at 7 p.m.

The meeting will be held at St. Mary’s Hospital Medical Conference Center on Union Street. A certified service officer will be on hand to help veterans and their families fill out claim forms. St. Vincent DePaul Mission holding benefit walk

WATERBURY — Walk in their footsteps and Race for awareness, a 2.5 mile walk and 5K race sponsored by St. Vincent DePaul Mission of Waterbury, is scheduled for Oct. 28, at  Library Park in Waterbury.

The walk is to increase awareness of the effects of poverty and support the services of the mission. Registration for walkers is $10 and free for children 9 years old and under. Registration for runners is $25 and $30 after Oct. 25.
