Women’s soccer team seeking players
OXFORD — Valley Fire, an over 30 women’s soccer team, based in Oxford is seeking players for the fall season.
Players must turn 30 by Dec. 31, 2013, although goalkeepers can be 28 years old. The team plays in the Nutmeg Women’s League, and games are Sundays at 4 p.m. If the time is changed, the games are played at 3 p.m. The team practices Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings.
The league is considered recreational. However play is competitive and skills and experience are necessary.

Shakesperience announces summer performance
WATERBURY — Shakesperience will present a production of “Much Ado About Nothing” at McLaughlin Vineyard in Sandy Hook on Aug. 24.
The production is part of Shakesperience Productions, Inc.’s Vintage Shakesperience, a summer tour of Connecticut festivals and wineries.

Waterbury Chorale seeking singers
WATERBURY — The Waterbury Chorale is seeking qualified new singers for the 2013-14 season.
The group performs four-part choral works of medium to advanced difficulty, and ranging in style from the classics to contemporary works. All performances use a combination of piano, organ, chamber ensemble and orchestral accompaniment. Rehearsals run from the last week in August through the end of April and are held on Mondays from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Watertown.
Interested singers should have some experience in singing music in four-parts, adequate vocal ability and blend, basic reading skills, a good musical ear, availability to attend rehearsals and work ethic to learn the music for performance.

TEAM receives grant for senior services
DERBY — The Hewitt Foundation recently awarded a $65,000 grant to TEAM, Inc for senior services.
The grant will help pay for daily delivery of Meals and Wheels along with weekly homemaking services.
“The Hewitt Foundation is a fabulous resource for our elderly service programs and allows TEAM to stretch and reach beyond what would be possible with federal and state budget cuts. We can’t thank Hewitt Foundation enough for their support of this critical community service,” President and CEO of TEAM Richard Knoll said.

StayWell, Wellmore approve affiliation
WATERBURY — StayWell Health Care Inc. and Wellmore Behavioral Health Inc. have approved an affiliation agreement to work together to seek opportunities for improved health care outcomes for residents of the Waterbury region, the organizations said in a news release.
StayWell is a health center that provides health care and social services to the uninsured and under-insured, including medical, dental and behavioral health services.
Wellmore Behavioral Health serves a 48-town region spanning from greater Waterbury to the lower Naugatuck Valley and northwest Connecticut, providing behavioral health, psychiatric, substance abuse and drug addiction recovery, prevention, early intervention and community support programs.
Foundation donates to VNA Home Health Care Fund
NEW HAVEN — The Visiting Nurse Association of South Central Connecticut was recently awarded a $27,500 grant from the First Niagara Foundation.
Through the VNA/First Niagara Home Health Care Fund, home health services are provided to Greater New Haven residents who are uninsured or underinsured.
“For the past three years, First Niagara has helped our VNA fill a large gap,” said John R. Quinn, president & CEO of the VNA/SCC. “Due to the state of the economy, like other non-profits, we have received less philanthropic support these past few fiscal years, yet there is a greater need than ever to provide services to the underinsured. First Niagara recognized the serious need to fill this gap and continues to offer overwhelmingly generous financial support, living up to their mission of being a genuine neighbor of choice.”
Of the grant, $7,500 of the grant will be used for the 2014 Nightingale Awards for Excellence in Nursing Program hosted by the VNA/SCC, which honors area nurses and provides scholarships to students in the five area schools of nursing.
Access Rehab Centers receives national award
WATERBURY — Access Rehab Centers recently received the National Association of Rehabilitation Agencies’ “Award for Innovation” for their Women’s Health Clinic.
This award is offered once a year to a rehabilitation agency that “demonstrates excellence in the creation of an innovation that has made a demonstrable difference in their rehab business.”
“Access Rehab Centers Women’s Health Clinic is the only one of its kind that I am aware of,” said Brian Emerick, President for Access Rehab Centers. “The concept has been an almost instant success and physicians seem to be genuinely happy to have clinicians available who specialize in clinical skills related to the unique needs of women.”
Access Rehab Centers, founded in 1998, is a partnership between Waterbury Hospital and Easter Seals. A member of the Greater Waterbury Health Network, Access employs over 160 staff in 11 clinics located throughout Greater Waterbury, Southbury, Naugatuck, Middlebury, Oxford, Thomaston and Wolcott.
NVCC holding walk-in registration
WATERBURY — Naugatuck Valley Community College is holding walk-in registration events throughout August.
The events will be held Aug. 17 and Aug. 27 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the NVCC campus, 750 Chase Parkway. WOLCOTT — The monthly meeting of an ADD/ADHD support group in Wolcott will be held Aug. 20.
The group will meet from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Wolcott Activity and Learning Center, 48 Todd Road. Guest speaker Lisa Sugrue, a wellness consultant from Health Matters, will present the program, “Jumpstart the day with a Brainy Breakfast!” The group discusses natural options and strategies to manage ADD/ADHD symptoms. Palace offering program for area high school students
WATERBURY — The Palace Theater announced that the American Savings Foundation has awarded the nonprofit performing arts center a $27,000 grant in support of the after-school character development program “Perspectives and Perceptions.”
The two-month education program, which will take 50 high school students, is designed to enhance students’ language arts curriculum, promote theater appreciation, encourage creative expression and foster self-esteem. The program also provides students with an opportunity to develop an original artistic project. Students will also receive complimentary tickets to attend the theater’s presentations of Jersey Boys and Elf The Musical at the Palace, as well as two interactive question and answer sessions with the casts.

Free social service screenings available
SOUTHBURY — Free social service screenings for food stamps and other programs will be held Aug.15 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Jewish Federation, 444 Main St. North, Southbury.
The Federation’s Brownstein Jewish Family Service has teamed up with StayWell Health Center to continue offering these free monthly social service screenings, by appointment, for a dozen work support, basic needs programs, including SNAP (the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly food stamps), HUSKY, Medicaid and Charter Oak insurance.

Seymour Pink donates to survivorship program
SEYMOUR — Seymour Pink recently donated $10,000 to support the Cancer Survivorship Program at the Center for Cancer Care at Griffin Hospital in Derby.
The donation will specifically support complementary services offered through the survivorship program, including an exercise program designed specifically for breast cancer survivors, one-on-one consultation time with a cancer certified exercise trainer, nutritional counseling with a registered dietician, and guest speakers to address topics of interest to patients and their families, Center for Cancer Care staff, and area primary care physicians and specialists.
