Oxford Historical Society to present Civil War program

OXFORD — The Oxford Historical Society will present Kevin Johnson as Private William Webb, an African-American Civil War soldier from Connecticut.

Private Webb was an actual soldier, a native of Hartford.  He was recruited in 1863 and served in the 29th (Colored) Regiment, Connecticut Volunteer Infantry in several battles in Virginia under Oxford native Colonel William B. Wooster.

The program will be held Oct. 27 at 1 p.m. at the Oxford Grange Hall on Route 67 in Oxford. Admission is $5 for adults and $2 for students, with a maximum cost of $10 per family.  Proceeds will be used for continued restoration and preservation at the society’s Twitchell-Rowland Homestead Museum.

Cheshire church holding organ recital

CHESHIRE — The Cheshire Lutheran Church will celebrate the return of its Schlicker pipe organ with an organ recital by guest organist Andrew Schaeffer.

Schaeffer, who is currently pursuing a master of music degree in organ performance from the Yale School of Music through the Yale Institute of Sacred Music, is serving as organist of the University Church at Yale.

The six rank Schlicker pipe organ at Cheshire Lutheran Church has served the congregation since its installation in January of 1961 and now has been totally restored by the Allen Hill Pipe Organ Consulting Firm.

Chamber presenting women’s forum

WATERBURY — The Waterbury Regional Chamber of Commerce’s 2012 Business Women’s Forum will be held Nov. 1.

The annual conference for women will feature Elizabeth Vargas, award-winning anchor of ABC-TV’s “20/20” newsmagazine, Chris Dailey, University of Connecticut womens basketball associate head coach, and Dennis Snow, formerly with the Walt Disney World company and now an expert customer service speaker, author and trainer.

The forum will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Connecticut Convention Center, 100 Columbus Boulevard, Hartford. Tickets are $175 per person. Crafters sought for fair  

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary is accepting applications for its annual craft fair.

The fair will take place Nov. 3 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Middlebury firehouse.   Spaces are 8-feet-by-10-feet and cost $30.
