PROSPECT — The Town Council last week unanimously appointed Ann Marie Burr to be the town’s tax collector.
Burr, who was the assistant tax collector, has been serving as acting tax collector since May when former Tax Collector Diane M. Lauber died. Burr and Lauber are sisters and their father, Lucien Fortier, served as tax collector from 1977 to 1989, when Lauber was appointed.
“I assure you that I will continue to run the tax office with the highest standards of accountability, devotion and public service that has been established in that office since 1977,” Burr said.
The tax collector is an elected position. Burr will serve Lauber’s remaining term, then the position will be up for election in November. The salary for the position is $56,573 for the 2019-20 fiscal year.
Burr, a Prospect native, is a Republican and member of the Prospect Republican Town Committee. She has an associate degree in business management with a concentration in accounting. The town hired Burr as a part-time tax clerk in 2008. She received her state municipal collector certification in 2012 and was appointed assistant tax collector in 2014.
Burr is in the process of seeking candidates for assistant tax collector. She expects to have a candidate to present to the town later in the summer.
