NAUGATUCK — Beginning Tuesday, the Assessor’s Office will be accepting applications for the elderly renter’s program.

The application period runs through Sept. 14.

In order to be eligible for a refund, a person or their spouse, if living with him/her, must have been 65 years old or over at the close of the preceding year.

Persons receiving social security disability benefits are also entitled to receive benefits, providing they meet the requirements of this program. The only exception is that they do not have to be 65 years of age. However, the TPQY form from the social security department must be presented when applying.

Also to qualify, a person must rent the house, condo or apartment he/she lives in or share rent payment. They must have been a resident of the state for at least one year before filing a claim.

Income limits are $32,300 for a single person and $39,500 for married couples. Qualifying income is defined as an adjusted gross income.

A refund will be made by the state if 35 percent of rent and utilities exceed 5 percent of income. Telephone and cable TV are not considered as utilities. Rent, water, gas, electricity and heating bills must be presented.

Applicants must present proof of income for the year 2011 including a copy of their income tax return, if filed, or statements regarding pensions, interest, non-taxable interest, dividends, annuities, taxable portion of veteran’s benefits or any other income.  Also needed is a statement from the social security department with 2011 figures.
