NAUGATUCK — The Naugatuck Police Department warned residents about a phone scam involving a call from someone who claims to be a police officer.

The way the scam works, police said, is people will receive a call from a number that shows up as the phone number for the department, 203-729-5222, but didn’t originate from the department. The callers say they are Naugatuck police officers, tell people there are various crimes associated with their Social Security numbers and ask them to wire money to clear up the phony charges.

Police said officers would never ask for money from residents. Police urged people to be aware of suspicious calls and to not give any personal information if they receive such a call.
